Welsh Mountain Pony

The Welsh Mountain Pony is one of the most famous horse breeds today and is considered a breed of antiquity because of its notable Celtic pony ascendants.  Since its ancestors, the breed has been roaming the Welsh Hills for more than a thousand years.  This breed is distinguished by height, hardy and surefooted physical features.  In addition, they have known to be refined and have good soundness brought about by their strong stamina and strong, clean bones. 

What made this breed possess intelligence and develop hard constitution was because of all the hardships and dangers they had gone through throughout the centuries in order to survive.  Because of this realization, Julius Caesar was one of those men who were found fascinated and impressed with the breed when he saw the ponies possessing good qualities just by drawing the chariots.  To his command, he brought many of them back to Rome and began breeding the finest foundations of the pony breed.  The export made of the British ponies evidently was the first on the record.

During 1900s the breed had gained its demand among people when they realized that the breed was possessing asset when grazed with cattle and sheep.  That was when there was gradual development for the market for the ponies.  Buyers were found to have travelled from afar searching for the perfect kind of breed for their kind of livelihood and lifestyle where the Welsh Mountain ponies were qualified.

The stud book for Welsh breeds was first published during 1901 and served as guide to the breeders.  During this time notable landowners and farmers and pony breeding enthusiasts found the breed to have claimed interest to the people and decided to form the Welsh Pony and Cob Society together with the establishment of the standards of the breeding.

Because they are found to be breeds of good quality and intelligence, the Welsh Mountain Ponies were famous as cavalry horses as well.  Aside from that, they were of good use as pit ponies and working animals to aid with the farm chores.
